Hwang Minhyun

With Wanna One’s contract coming to an end on December 31, 2018, the members of Wanna One are now allowed to use social media.

Wanna One Minhyun (민현) is a South Korean singer under Pledis Entertainment. He is best known as a member of NU'EST. In 2017, he and fellow members JR, Baekho and Ren entered and participated in Produce 101 Season 2 and in the finale, he finished in 9th, making him a member of Wanna One. Wanna One Hwang Min-hyun (황민현), better known by the mononym Minhyun (민현), is a South Korean singer and actor. He debuted in 2012 as a lead vocalist of the South Korean boy group NU'EST. He also became a member of the project boy group Wanna One, after winning the 9th place on Mnet's survival show, Produce 101: Season 2. Minhyun was able to raise his rank from D to B after the first theme song evaluation, making him a key player in the group song evaluation. This is when he first earned the title “Emperor Hwang,” for putting together what is now known as “The Justice League” team, a riff off of last year’s The Avengers team.

Fans noticed that Hwang Minhyun changed his bio from “L.O.V.E.” (NU’EST’s fanclub name) to “Hwang Minhyun” and he has received a lot of hate as a result.

Before Produce 101 Season 2 days, Hwang Minhyun’s original bio was “Hwang Minhyun” but changed it to his fandom name while on the show.

He then made it into Wanna One and was unable to change anything or upload a post due to their contract’s restrictions. The recent change back to his name, however, has upset several NU’EST fans.

  • “Are all of you okay? I’m not. Until now for Minhyun’s sake, for NU’EST’s sake I only say nice things. I didn’t complain once and worked hard to hold it all back. This is the first time I’ve been as hurt as I am today. I’m so upset I think I’m going to cry.”
  • “Though I understand, there’s nothing I can do about my upset heart.”
  • “Honestly, I’m not okay. The first thing he did was this. We held back so much for 1 year and a half but now I feel like breaking down. I thought I was the only one who was sad.”
  • “I also was able to hold on just because of that one thing. I guess I’m too narrow minded.”
  • “I’m having a hard time because he deleted ‘L.O.V.E.’ before even greeting us. Though I’m upset, we are LO.V.E. and we will support everything. Just believe that time is medicine.”

Korean fans also began to post about the situation, claiming that Minhyun shouldn’t be taking care of “those” fans and “those” members during such a special time — a moment where he is finally back to being a NU’EST member.

  • “I won’t say anything if you take care of those fans. Sure, you can follow those who were your members for 1 year and a half. No one can say anything against that. But at this period? At this timing?”
  • “Wah f**k that b**stard that didn’t write one fancafe post saying he’s back kekekeke it seems he has time to freshen up his Instagram. Is this the manners you always talked about? You’re so rude”
  • “While you were promoting, I stayed right here. I know you have fans there, and that’s fine. You don’t have to freeze your bio or following forever and I know you want to live in a bigger world but could you have chosen a better timing?”
  • “Those fans who always chanted his name at the end, are you watching!! You’ve been scammed!!”
  • “I just want to have 4 evening primroses from now on.”

Following a post about the situation on a Korean community site, netizen support for Minhyun began to flood in.

  • “[Pledis] is suing [hateful commenters] aren’t the L.O.V.Es who hated on him for changing his bio going to get caught?”
  • “What did Hwang Minhyun even do wrong? These stupid girls. Did you think that if Hwang Minhyun came back to NU’EST they would do better? Hwang Minhyun should just live off being a soloist. As a Wanna One member, he probably has his own thoughts as well. Can’t believe he’s being sworn at just for changing his bio. So pitiful really.”
  • “Please fangirl healthily. You’re like this over changing his name?”
  • “If you’re a normal fan, you should be happy Hwang Minhyun is back to Instagram. I just see kids whining over being jealous because he changed his bio and followed Wanna One members”.

International fans have explained that the initial change from “Hwang Minhyun” to “L.O.V.E.” was because he had become a NU’EST W fan during his time as a Wanna One member. The reason for his change back to Hwang Minhyun is because he is back to being a NU’EST member.

So to wrap things up. Back in 2015 Optimushwang is Hwang Minhyun.

2017-2018 he’s a L.O.V.E coz he’s a NUEST W’s fanboy.

2019 he’s back as Hwang Minhyun. He can’t be the NUEST fanboy coz he’s the member now.

Ok. Case closed. Let’s all go home and get an ice cream. pic.twitter.com/zrKqfXbVpI

Universe MV Theory

Since everyone’s having a go at deciphering the MV concept and how it links to the entire NU'verse storyline, I thought I’d throw my theory into the mix.

I’d like to start by revisiting where this all began, the manhwa the entire Knight concept has been based loosely on and that’s the manhwa ‘The Queen’s Knight’.

Minhyun was the main lead in ‘Overcome’, finding the Queen before the others and therefore he more than likely depicts the main male character in the manhwa, Reino.

In the manhwa, Reino is a knight from a fantasy kingdom and the main female character is from Earth. He saves her life only if she promises to be the queen of the kingdom he’s from; she agrees. During a series of events, the main female character ends up back on Earth, in her home country. That’s when Reino starts invading her dreams in an attempt to draw her back to his kingdom.

What I believe is happening in the ‘Universe’ MV is that Minhyun is depicting Reino by trying to draw and convince the Queen to return to his kingdom by infiltrating her dreams. The ‘helmet’ that Minhyun is seen wearing throughout the MV is an old fashioned EEG machine, used to monitor brain waves (I believe it’s an EEG machine because of the brain wave teasers NU'EST W released-this would connect together and make sense). Minhyun is connected to this as it is monitoring his brain waves whilst he sleeps.

The old man who appears in the MV seems to be helping Minhyun as he aids him by connecting the crystals to the machine and by collecting the crystals too; perhaps he’s a scientist? A lot of people thought he was sinister but the way Minhyun bows to him and regards him makes me think otherwise.

I definitely feel like the old man was helping Minhyun. When Minhyun rouses and sees the old man on the balcony near the beginning of the MV, he doesn’t seem surprised or suspicious, just lethargic from constantly sleeping.

The crystals themselves I believe are time crystals. Time crystals are a recent theorised scientific phenomenon and have absolutely nothing to do with time travel.

To simplify what time crystals are: they have a 4 dimensional structure whereas ordinary crystals have a 3 dimensional structure. This 4 dimensional structure means they can break time-translation symmetry. They therefore break the law of physics which states that energy can’t be made or destroyed. The energy in time crystals continue to repeat even at a low energy state; put simply, they provide a lot of energy which doesn’t run out very quickly. Whilst the crystals might not have such a legitimate scientific background in the MV, I feel like it’s important to understand that they’re nothing to do with time travel. I don’t believe Minhyun is time travelling at all in the MV. I believe he’s travelling through dimensions in order to reach the Queen in her dreams and the constant flow of energy from a time crystal is what allows him to endure prolonged periods of sleep in order to do this.

Those moments where Minhyun is with the Queen, he’s trying hard to win her back and convince her to return with him. He spends time with her as much as he possibly can, even though travelling through dimensions and entering her dreams really takes a toll on his physical body but he can’t give up. He wants and needs her back.

But then Minhyun grows desperate, to the point that when the old man isn’t around, he steals those crystals from the reserves and uses them all in one go. The old man is clearly there to help ensure Minhyun is safely travelling through dimensions but Minhyun is too impatient, too anxious for some reason.

By using more than one crystal, Minhyun ends up entering a deeper sleep which causes him to enter a comatose-like state. The old man tries to wake Minhyun up but to no avail.

Minhyun searches desperately for the Queen in her dreams. She’s aloof so he keeps searching until he eventually finds her. They regard one another and it’s clear to see that the Queen is realising just how desperate Minhyun’s actions are and how dangerous they are.

Minhyun

The only way Minhyun can return to his physical body is if he lets the Queen go. She realises this and tries to leave him. He tries to hold on to her, tries to convince her to return but enough is enough. Spending time with one another in dreams was wonderful but it’s time Minhyun woke up and faced reality before he tears through the very fabric of time and space with his reckless actions. So she leaves.

Minhyun bows to the Queen one last time before descending the stairs and leaving her world behind, both physically and mentally.

When he finally opens his eyes, well…we’ll find out in NU'EST’s comeback MV what happens next!

After rescuing the Queen in ‘Overcome’ and celebrating her return in ‘Love Paint’, it will be interesting to see what the final third MV in this trilogy will depict story wise. I may be wrong about the Queen and she may actually return in the third MV, but I feel like the poignant lyrics combined with the way the Queen leaves in the MV indicates that she may not be present in the final instalment for NU’EST’s next comeback. Or if she is, it’ll be a final goodbye.

For anyone who wants any sources for the information I used to research the MV concept, message me and I’ll happily share. Hope what I wrote makes sense. It’s just one theory in an ocean of many.
