Errors related to widevinecdm.dll can arise for a few different different reasons. For instance, a faulty application, widevinecdm.dll has been deleted or misplaced, corrupted by malicious software present on your PC or a damaged Windows registry.

  1. WidevineCDM (Content Decryption Module) is a DRM component used in Chromium based desktop and Android browsers. It is used to decrypt, decode, or enable playback of DRM protected video content. Widevine is disabled in Brave by default and must be explicitly installed before it can be enabled. Widevine only needs to install and run once to be enabled across all websites that would require it. Installing WidevineCdm.
  2. I recently upgraded to the x64 installation of Firefox. In doing so I noticed that the Widevine Content Decryption Module is constantly stuck on the 'will be installing shortly' dialog. So far I have attempted the following fixes to no avail: -Manually install from Google -Create a clean profile.
  3. The DRM module, once it has been downloaded, is enabled, and disabled in the same manner as other plug-ins. Since version 47, 76 'Google's Widevine CDM on Windows and Mac OS X so streaming services like Amazon Video can switch from Silverlight to encrypted HTML5 video' is also supported.

The most commonly occurring error messages are:

  • The program can't start because widevinecdm.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
  • There was a problem starting widevinecdm.dll. The specified module could not be found.
  • Error loading widevinecdm.dll. The specified module could not be found.
  • The code execution cannot proceed because widevinecdm.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
  • widevinecdm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vender for support.

In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall widevinecdm.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.

If you’re someone who likes to view Netflix and Hulu content within your web browser on your computer, you may come across an error about Widevine. Widevine is a digital rights management (DRM) technology owned by Google and is needed in order to play a lot of the content on these platforms. Widevine comes in the form of a small extension within Brave Browser, however you may need to manually enable it to get it working.

You will quickly know you have the Widevine error in Brave when trying to view content from Netflix or Hulu. The error from Netflix will look as follows;

The error can be a little confusing as it mentions Chrome, while we are clearly using Brave. This is because Brave is based off the open source version of Chrome called Chromium. We can still fix the error however.

Head to the Settings

We need to head into our extension settings. You can do this by typing brave://settings/extensions into the URL bar, or by heading to the hamburger settings menu in the top right, and then selecting “Extensions”.

From here, scroll down to the entry dedicated to Widevine. We need to ensure the settings “Ask when a site wants to install Widevine on your computer” is enabled.

Now head back to Brave Browser where your Netflix or Hulu video is playing and refresh the page. You should have a notification pop up asking you to install the Widevine extension, such as below.

If you want to run Widevine just this once, hit Allow. Otherwise, to not have the error appear again, tick the box “Don’t ask again” and then Allow.
